How are these distances calculated?

All distances shown are driving miles between school campuses. We've saved official NCAA distances over the years, but for pairs we don't have on file, we use OSRM (Open Source Routing Machine), the same open-source routing engine behind many popular mapping apps, to estimate the drive. From analyzing the largest differences between OSRM and NCAA-verified distances, it's clear the NCAA often prioritizes (a) avoiding toll roads, especially main ones like turnpikes, and (b) shorter driving time over shorter driving distance.
